One of the great delights of concerts at Farley's House of Pianos is the opportunity to hear familiar works in fresh ways. This was especially the case this weekend as cellist Parry Karp and pianist Eli Kálmán presented two recitals that together encompass Beethoven's entire catalog of works for cello and piano.
The novel element was a concert grand piano restored in Farley's workshop, one of small group of pianos Steinway made to commemorate the 1876 United States centennial.
The masterful blend of the two instruments in this concert proved to be very different from familiar recordings and live concerts featuring modern pianos. There is a much enhanced sense of dialog between the two instruments and even between the different ranges of each instrument in a recital setting.
We thank Parry and Eli for providing this once-in-a-lifetime experience! |
